Karen Evanoff

Karen Evanoff is Dena'ina Athabascan who grew up in Nondalton, Alaska. She earned a degree in anthropology from the University of Alaska Fairbanks, and works as a cultural anthropologist for the National Park Service at Lake Clark National Park and Preserve. In the interviews she did for the Lake Clark National Park Project Jukebox in 1998 and 1999, she is identified as Karen Stickman, which was her married name at the time.

Agnes Cusma	98-27-22, Side A	Lake Clark National Park	Agnes Cusma was interviewed on June 24, 1998 by Karen Evanoff Stickman in Nondalton, Alaska. In this interview, Agnes talks about the traditional Dena'ina lifestyle in the Lake Clark region where they lived off the land by hunting, fishing and trapping, and learned skills from their elders. She also talks about the types of houses they lived in, plants they used for medicine, Native sport hunting guides, the methods of transportation used, and the trails people used to get around the area.
Nicholia Balluta	98-27-21	Lake Clark National Park	Nicholia Balluta was interviewed on October 31, 1998 by Karen Evanoff Stickman in Nondalton, Alaska. In this interview, Nicholia talks about his childhood and learning to live off the land from his parents and grandparents, his experience in church, and the importance of education and teaching young people their Native language. He also discusses historic photographs of family members and people in Nondalton, Lime Village, Russian Mission, and Stony River, Alaska.

In this interview, Mary identifies historic photographs, and talks about living off the land, tanning skins, proper behavior, early transportation, respecting animals, traditional plant use, and taboo restrictions.
