Winton "Utuktaaq" Weyapuk, Jr.

Winton Weyapuk, Jr.

Winton "Utuktaaq" Weyapuk, Jr. was born in Wales, Alaska in 1950. He was a subsistence hunter since he was a young boy and was eleven years old when he first went out whaling with his father's crew. Winton became a whaling captain himself, and was Chair of the Wales Whaling Captains Association. He received a bachelor's degree in Rural Development with an emphasis in Land Use Planning in 1986 and a bachelor's degree in Inupiaq Eskimo language from the University of Alaska Fairbanks in 1987. He served on the Board of Directors of the Wales Native Corporation and on the Native Village of Wales, IRA Council. Winton shared his traditional knowledge of sea ice in the Bering Strait with scientific researchers, and is co-author with Igor Krupnik of Kiŋikmi Sigum Qanuq Ilitaavut: Wales Inupiaq Sea Ice Dictionary (Washington, D.C.: Arctic Studies Center, Smithsonian Institution, 2012). Winton Weyapuk, Jr. passed away in 2016.
