Caribou Boots | High-knee caribou boots with a strip of beaver fur along the top of the boots. These boots have soft soles probably caribou skin. The draw string at the top of the boots is probably caribou skin with blue and white yarn ends. There are two strips of caribou skin along the sides of the boots in order to tighten around the ankles. These boots are stitched with cotton thread and dental floss. A commercial textile lines the inside of the boots.<br><br>Donated by Dinah Larsen, these boots were made for her by a woman from Allakaket in 1967. ! 11/12/2009: According to Elders, the boots are made from fall caribou, as indicated by the short hair and thick skin. Doll | Soft-bodied doll with leather facial features in black stitch. Parka of muskrat belly trimmed with white and black calf skin in zigzag design with beaver, wolf ruff. Mittens are commercial leather with mouton tops, mittens have blue, pink and white yarn harness. Pants are mouton with cloth underneath. Boots are calf skin with leather soles and straps with otter and pink yarn trim. 62 cm tall.<br><br> | Ethnology; | |
Fish Trap Model | Model fish trap (probably loache/burbot or blackfish)*. 2 pieces, funnel and basket, which don't come apart. Thin strips of wood shaped and glued in place. End of basket is in the shape of a circle, does not come to a point. Fish trap fence on each side tied to trap with dental floss. 5 small wooden fish in trap with pencil features. Entire piece highly varnished. Small plaque attached to side of trap with "FROM JOHNSON MOSES ALLAKAKET, ALASKA" written in pencil. Dimensions of fish trap: 27.5 cm long. Mouth is 7.5 cm across and end is 2.5 cm across. Fish trap fences are 8 cm W x 6.5 cm H and 12 cm W x 7.5 cm H. | Ethnology; | |
Moccasins | Pair of smoked moosehide moccasins that show much wear; unplucked beaver fur trim at ankles and on tongues; ties of twisted blue and red wool; flower on vamp of each moccasin, daffodile? done in seed beads, black, yellow, three shades of green, orange, blue and red; sewing done with sinew and thread (dental floss?); tongues lined with printed cotton cloth; repaired by Poldine Carlo of Nulato. Each measures 32.7 cm long x 13.3 cm wide.<br><br>11/12/2009: According to Elders, these most likely were made by Sarah Simon who was known for putting green leaves and a bright flower at the toe of the vamp.
