image thumbnail Mrs. Frank Walley [Whalley] and Mrs. Wm. (Kitty) Sibley. Title by indexer. Original description from cataloger's notes. Left to right: Little Frank Walley, Mrs. Frank Walley, Billy Walley. Mrs. Wm. (Kitty) Sibley, Billy Sibley. "Mrs. Walley lived to be 96. She's half Indian, half Russian. [Kitty Sibley] is an Eskimo." In an e-mail dated 18 October 2010, William Whalley of Camas, Wash., added the following information: Mrs. Frank Walley(sic) was my grandmother, Mrs. Frank Whalley. So the spelling of the surname is Whalley, not Walley. "Little Frank Walley" is Frank Brooks Whalley, b Wiseman, AK, 9Apr1912, so the date of the photo looks to be 1913. "Mrs. Frank Walley" is Marie Winifred (Kokrine) Whalley, 18Jan1885-1Aug1976, so she only lived to be 91, not 96. She was the daughter of Gregory Kokrine (Henry Gregory Kokrine), Yukon river trader, and Teyotaa/Tatiana Larion. "Billy Walley" is my father, William Gregory Whalley, b. Nolan, AK, b 7Oct1909. The photo was taken of the porch of the Whalley cabin in Wiseman, AK Not pictured is Marie's husband, Frank Cuthbert Whalley (b 22Oct1879, Australia, d 29Nov1953, California). Frank and Marie were married by Fr. Juius [Jules] Jette in Tanana on 9Jun1908. Tishu V. Ulen collection;

image thumbnail Snowshoe, Horse Horse snowshoe made from wood in an oval shape. 14" long x 10.5" wide. Wood is approx. 1" thick. It has a metal strap over the top connected by bolts.Acc. to file: "On April 27, 1967, Keith Koontz came in and gave us more information on the horse snowshoe. The horse snowshoe we have is for the left rear foot. Mr. Pingelo designed and made these shoes for the horses he drove from Beaver to Wiseman, to haul freight for the miners. The horses got used to the shoes rather quickly. He drove double-ended sleds called (double-enders), and wagons in the summertime. He was a natural mechanic. People with boat motors in need of repair brought them to Mr. Pingelo to repair. He came from the coast and settled in Beaver. He was a good story teller. The three holes in the showshoe were to fit over the horse shoe nails in the horse's shoe. Mr. Pingelo is now deceased." Ethnology;
