Photo shows them all standing on the banks of the Koyukon River at Bettles. The river scow has just left the bank and headed north, up the river. This particular boat is the next-to-last one of the season, in fall 1919. "We [Tishu and Nellie] are gonna go to school now." McNeal may be spelled "MacNeal" elsewhere in this collection. Tishu V. There was too much wind north of Bettles, canvas was okay for a while but had to build with more substantial metal and wood. Snow ramps to get to the river bottoms when too steep. image thumbnail Doll Female Doll with wood stand. ! (A) Doll. Wood face, lightly carved with black ink for eyes and red ink for mouth. Plastic black hair across face. Large red fox ruff, shaved beaver parka, white cloth with flower decoration around bottom edge with red fox trim. Mittens and boots made of smoked moosehide with yellow, blue and red bead decoration (flower?). Legs are made of a felt? wool? material. 29 x 17 x 8 cm. ! (B) Wood Stand. Circular (not perfect circle) slice of Birch tree trunk with bark attached. Large nail nailed in center. Doll slips over nail to hold it upright. 16 x 10 x 10 cm.<br><br>03/06/2007: See paper file for article written by donor on her trip to Bettles, on which she purchased the doll. CRS. ! 5/21/2007: See Donor Questionnaire in file. "The doll was made by the new chief of the Clan of the Bear [Wolf, acc. to Elders; 11/12/2009 AJL] - Bettles, Alaska - related to "Tabook"[Tobuk is the correct spelling of this, acc. to Elders. AJL 11/12/2009]." AJL! 11/12/2009: According to Florence Nictune, an Elder from Bettles who visited the museum today, her daughter Mabel Shanahan was most likely the maker of this doll, not her as described by the donor/collector. As a result, the attribution of maker is changed to Mabel Shanahan today. AJL! Ethnology;
