Jarrod Decker

Jarrod Decker worked as a student employee for the Oral History Program at University of Alaska Fairbanks in 2000, where he helped develop Project Jukebox websites, conducted some oral history interviews, and helped compile a collection of materials (archival, historic photographs, oral history, newspaper articles, and artifacts) related to the community of Minto, Alaska held at the University of Alaska, Fairbanks. Jarrod went on to become a teacher in the Fairbanks area.

Berle Mercer 2000-17-29 Denali Mountaineering

Berle Mercer was interviewed on September 18, 2000 by Jarrod Decker at the Mercer ranch outside Healy, AK. Brett Navin and Todd Shorey from the Denali Foundation, a non-profit organization offering educational programs, were also present and assisted with the interview. In this interview, Berle talks about running pack horse trips into Denali National Park and freighting supplies to mountain climbers. He recalls packing in supplies for some of his most memorable clients, including the ill-fated Wilcox Expedition, Bradford and Barbara Washburn, and a very finicky wildlife photographer. Berle also discusses rescuing a Swiss climbing party that descended the Muldrow Glacier after their guide abandoned them on the West Buttress, and openly criticizes a number of Denali National Park policies and employees. He offers his opinions on controversial topics such as access to remote areas within Denali Park and the permit and concessionaire system.

Dennis Kogl was interviewed on September 13, 2000 by William Schneider at Elmer E. Rasmuson Library at the University of Alaska Fairbanks in Fairbanks, Alaska. In this interview, Dennis talks about running a dog sledding business in the Denali National Park area, taking clients out, and hauling freight up to mountain climbing groups on Denali. He also discusses differences between racing sled dogs and using them for freighting, the details of how to freight supplies and properly care for the dogs, and his thoughts about the use of dog teams for access into Denali National Park.
