Fred Hope

Fred Hope

Fred Hope (Shaaxhwaa Shaay Eesh) was a Tlingit elder of the Kiks.adi (Raven) Clan, Point House, who was born in Sitka, Alaska in 1934 to Tillie Howard and Andrew Hope. He graduated from Sheldon Jackson High School in 1954, commercially fished with his father, and served in the U.S. Army. He held various jobs throughout his life, including as a taxi driver, a laborer, and for  Alaska Lumber and Pulp until it closed in 1993, retiring as department supervisor. Fred was active in the Alaska Native Brotherhood, and in later years became involved in Tlingit cultural documentation and history projects. For example, he and his brother, Herb Hope, documented and organized a Kiks.adi survival march in 1994 and 1996, reenacting the original Kiks.adi march to Chichagof Island following the 1804 battle between the Tlingits and Russians at Indian River. Fred also enjoyed painting, drawing fishing boats, fishing, hunting, hiking, and bicycling. In the summer months, it was common to see Fred cycling many miles as he made his near daily rounds about town. Fred Hope passed away in 2019 at the age of 84. For more about Fred Hope, see his obituary in the Daily Sitka Sentinel newspaper.
