Evan Newman

Evan Newman

Evan Newman was born in 1953 to Irene (Anthony) and Maurice Newman in Holy Cross, Alaska. Evan is the youngest of their six children. He grew up learning to hunt, fish, trap and successfully live off the land from his father. He also followed in his father's footsteps and worked for the Alaska Village Electric Cooperative (AVEC) as the power plant operator in Holy Cross for 35 years. He was selected as Power Plant Operator of the Year on more than one occasion and retired in February 2019. Evan participated in the 2002 interview with his father, Maurice, for the Holy Cross Community Project Jukebox. He helped explain his father's answers to questions and added his own memories of growing up and living a subsistence lifestyle.
