Alice "Aaluk" Solomon
Alice Igñaviña Solomon (Aaluk) was an Iñupiaq born in 1918 in Barrow, Alaska (now known as Utqiaġvik). For many years, she worked as a translator for the North Slope Borough's Iñupiat History, Language and Culture Commission where she did in-person translating during oral history interviews and public meetings, as well as helped with the translation and transcription for historical and cultural publications. Alice was an active member of the Presbyterian Church and was part of a group translating the Bible into their Native Iñupiaq language. She also served her community in other ways, such as a member of the Iñupiat History, Language and Culture Commission, and the local health board. In the 1990s, as an elder, Alice was interviewed for historic photograph identification projects, such as the Barrow Photo Album Project Jukebox. Alice passed away in 2003.
