Emily "Qaummagun" Brower

Emily Hopson Brower (Qaummagun) was born in 1925 in Barrow, Alaska (now known as Utqiaġvik) to Alfred H. Hopson, Sr. and his wife, Maggie (Anaqin). Emily grew up in Barrow living a traditional subsistence lifestyle and going to school. She married Arnold Brower, Sr., and together they had seventeen children. She traveled in the Chipp-Ikpikpak area with Arnold, which included spending time at camps on the Chipp River and living at Alaqtaq (Half-Moon Three). Emily was known for her kind spirit and generous hospitality. As the wife of a successful whaling captain, hunter, and fisherman, she made any visitor feel welcome and always offered them something to eat. She was present when her husband, Arnold, was interviewed for the Chipp-Ikpikpuk and Meade Rivers Oral History Project in 1982 and 1983, and periodically chimed in from the background with her own comments. Emily Brower passed away in 2000 at age 74.
