Denise Wartes

Denise Wartes is the daughter-in-law of Bonnie Wartes, who was interviewed for the Gates of the Arctic Project Jukebox. Denise was present during Bonnie's 2004 interview. Denise is married to Mark Wartes, who grew up in Barrow and as a young man continued to live a subsistence-based lifestyle in the Colville River delta. After marriage, Denise continued to live this remote lifestyle with Mark until their children were school age and they moved into Fairbanks, Alaska. Denise is the Program Manager for the Rural Alaska Honors Insitute (RAHI) at the University of Alaska Fairbanks, a program which provides rural high school students with a college type experience in preparation for their coming to the university.
