George Wilson, Sr.

George Wilson, Sr. was born in 1937 in Levelock, Alaska to Clarence Wilson, who came to Alaska from Nebraska in 1919, and his second wife, Sassa Clark. George was was born and raised in Levelock and moved to Igiugig in 1976 with his second wife, Anne, whom he married in 1966. George attended school through the eighth grade and quit high school to go trapping on the Branch River. He has been a successful subsistence hunter, fisherman and trapper in the Igiugig area, including around Kukaklek and Nonvianuk lakes, and has been using a snowmachine since 1966 and an All-Terrain Vehicle (ATV) since 1977 for trapping, hunting, and traveling. George started working in the fish canneries in Bristol Bay when he was a teenager, and then in 1958 started commercial fishing for the Nakeen company in the summertime to help support his family. He bought his first independent boat in 1967. George still has family in Levelock and spends part of the year down there getting ready for fishing.

Anne and George Wilson, Sr., Part 1	Anne and George Wilson, Sr. were interviewed on March 7, 1995 by Bill Schneider and Don Callaway at the Wilson's home in Igiugig, Alaska. In this first part of a three part interview, Anne and George share their personal backgrounds of growing up in the Levelock and Igiugig areas, moving around with the seasons as subsistence hunters and trappers. George talks about his trapping activities and how he first learned to hunt and trap. Anne and George Wilson, Sr., Part 2	This is the continuation of an interview with Anne and George Wilson, Sr. on March 7, 1995 by Bill Schneider and Don Callaway in the Wilson's home in Igiugig, Alaska. In this second part of three part interview, Anne and George talk about their seasonal round of subsistence activities. George also talks about being a commercial fisherman, using a snowmachine and All-Terrain Vehicle (ATV) for trapping and hunting, and how subsistence has changed in the region with land use restrictions, increased air traffic, and expansion of sport fishing and hunting lodges. Anne talks about running the household and raising the children while George was away for long periods on the trapline. In this third part of a three part interview, Anne and George talk about the impacts to their lifestyle from having a national park and preserve as their neighbor. They discuss differences between attitudes and hunting practices of local users and sportsmen, the effect of regulation, and changes they have seen in the environment since they were young.
