Danny Roehl

Danny Roehl

Danny Roehl was born in Goose Bay, Alaska near Chekok to Paris Skobia and Charles Roehl. Danny's mother was Athabascan originally from Old Iliamna and he grew up living a subsistence lifestyle of fishing, hunting, trapping and moving around the region to survive. His grandfather ran Roehl's Trading Post at Old Iliamna, and Danny's father supported the family by commercial fishing and trapping. Eventually, Danny joined his father in the commercial fishing business and later worked on the Alaska Railroad near Seward. In later years, Danny and his wife, Nellie, moved back to Kokhanok and operated a hunting and fishing lodge at Nielsen Bay.

Danny Roehl, Interview 1

Danny Roehl was interviewed on August 7, 1997 by Judith Morris at his home in Kokhanok, Alaska. In this first part of a two part interview, Danny talks about his family background and work history, and the family surviving from trapping, commercial fishing, and subsistence hunting and fishing. He also talks about running a hunting lodge, the importance of respecting animals, and changes in transportation and access to hunting areas. He discusses the impact of Katmai National Park to local people and their way of live, and changes he has noticed in the climate.

Danny Roehl, Interview 2

Danny Roehl was interviewed on November 1, 1999 by Don Callaway and Bill Schneider in Kokhanok, Alaska. In this interview, Danny talks about operating a lodge, hunting and trapping, and changes he has seen in the wildlife populations, in the types of transportation used, and the impacts from increased guiding and sport hunting activity. He also discusses the arrival of All-Terrain Vehicles (ATV's) to the area, how that has impacted subsistence,  and changes he has seen in the caribou population over time. Finally, Danny talks about changes in the community and the lifestyles of village residents.
