Mary Ann Johnson

Mary Ann Johnson lives in Dillingham, Alaska. She was born in 1940 to Socally and Sassa A. Johnson Wallona. Her siblings are Connie Timmerman, Carol Davidson, Phillip and Leroy Wallona, Judy Samuelsen, Rose Loera, and the late Emma Ann Nicholson. In December 1958, Mary Ann married William P. Johnson. Together they have had 5 children, 13 grandchildren, and 14 great grandchildren. Mary Ann attended school in Dillingham and graduated from Dillingham High School. For many years in the 1960’s and 1970’s, she cooked and ran the school lunch program. For 40 years, she commercial fished with her dad, husband, and son. Mary Ann enjoys reading, sewing and visiting with friends at tea parties.

William Johnson, Mary Ann Johnson, and Kimberly Williams

Willliam and Mary Ann Johnson and their daughter, Kim Williams were interviewed on December 10, 2015 by Karen Hebert at the Johnson's home in Dillingham, Alaska. In this interview, they talk about the importance of fishing in Bristol Bay and their family's fishing activities. They discuss their roles in local advocacy and Native organizations, and changes in fishery management and the Limited Entry permit system. They also talk about the importance of leadership, the Pebble Mine debate and impacts from development, and give advice to the next generation.
