Clarence Summers

Clarence Summers was the District Ranger for Wrangell-St. Elias National Park and Preserve stationed in Yakutat, Alaska from 1982-1988. He grew up in Fairfax County, Virgina in the 1950s, went to J.E.B. Stuart High School in Falls Church, Virginia, and earned his college degree at the University of Maryland. Clarence has had a long career with the National Park Service, starting with summer seasonal positions while he was in college. He worked as a seasonal ranger at Canaveral National Seashore, Everglades National Park, Biscayne National Park, Haleakala National Park, and Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve. He first came to Alaska in 1972 as a park technician at Glacier Bay, and in 1979 he did a boundary survey of the area prior to passage of the Alaska National Interest Lands Conservation Act (ANILCA). In 1981, Clarence was hired as the first district ranger in Yakutat representing both Wrangell-St. Elias National Park and Preserve and Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve. In 1988, he became the District Ranger stationed at the Slana Ranger Station in Wrangell-St. Elias National Park. Later in 1988, he transferred to the Park Service's Subsistence Division at the regional office in Anchorage, Alaska, where he continues to work today.
