Gloria McNutt

Gloria McNutt

Gloria McNutt was born in 1926 in San Antonio, Texas. After finishing high school, she worked in the offices of two different local airline companies. In 1952, she married her husband, Raymon "Mac" McNutt, who was from nearby Stockdale, Texas, and they came to Alaska. The McNutts lived in Anchorage, and homesteaded in Sterling and Chisana, Alaska. Gloria worked as the postmaster at Sterling for many years, and spent part of the summer helping her husband run his guiding business at Chisana and Horsfeld, all while also raising her children. At one point, she also ran her own bed and breakfast in an old 1935 buiding in Chisana. In 1989, after Gloria retired from the post office, she and Ray spent three years living at Chisana full-time. They then moved to Anchorage, where Gloria lived until her death. Ray McNutt retired from guiding in 2003 at the age of 78, and he died in 2005. Gloria McNutt passed away in July 2015. For more about Gloria, see her obituary in the Peninsula Clarion newspaper.
