Bob Bishop
Bob Bishop was born in San Francisco, California in 1944 and grew up in San Carlos, California. He joined the U.S. Army at age 18 after graduating from St. Francis High School in Mountain View, California. After basic training at Fort Ord, California he attended Military Police School in Fort Gordon, Georgia. Bob came to Alaska in December 1963 to work as a MP (Military Police) at the Site Tare (A Battery A/2/562) Nike Missile Site on the bluff overlooking Moose Creek, just outside of Fairbanks. There he learned the art of being a guard dog handler as part of his duty to provide security in the launching area. After leaving Alaska in June 1965, Bob attended the University of California at Berkeley and studied criminology with the goal of becoming a probation officer. After he graduated, the economy declined and he was unable to find a job in his field. So Bob got a job working for his father-in-law doing gardening in San Mateo, California. He eventually took over the business, which he continues to operate.
