Fred Hupprich

Fred Hupprich was born in 1926 in Nenana, Alaska where his father was chief engineer on Tanana and Yukon River sternwheelers and later worked for the Alaska Railroad. His mother was from Germany and came to Nenana to work in the family’s bakery business. Fred's childhood was full of mischief and adventure. He was in the Army and held a variety of jobs, including working on the railroad, trucking, building airports, hauling wood, and operating a bar.

Fred Hupprich, Interview 1, Part 1	Fred Hupprich was interviewed on January 7, 1994 by Margaret Van Cleve in Fairbanks, Alaska. In this first part of a two-part interview, Fred talks about growing up in Nenana, the railroad’s role in the community, railroad jobs, and working as a trucker. Fred Hupprich, Interview 2	This is an excerpt from a recording of Fred Hupprich speaking at the Pioneer Aviation Museum's public lecture series at Pioneer Park in Fairbanks, Alaska on January 20, 2015. In this part of the recording, Fred talks about his connection with the famous pilot, Carl Ben Eielson, who flew Fred's pregnant mother from Nenana to Fairbanks so she could have an emergency cesarian to give birth to Fred. Fred also talks about flying with Frank Barr and suffering bleeding ears after a sudden steep descent when flying in bad weather.
