In 1968, the Alaska legislature created fourteen Alaska District Court judgeships across the state. Magistrate Nora Guinn was appointed to the Bethel District Court, becoming one of the first women judges in the state and the first Alaska Native judge. She was a member of the Alaska Judges Association and the Juvenile Judges Association, and received an honorary Doctor of Law degree from the University of Alaska Anchorage in 1978.
