Prior to Alaska Statehood, Nora Guinn served as a U.S. Commissioner for the U.S. Territorial Court for the Territory of Alaska. Upon Alaska Statehood in 1959, she was soon appointed as the state court magistrate, a position she held for eight years. A fluent Yupik speaker, she was known for often conducting court proceedings in Yupik to ensure that those appearing before her understood both the law and the legal process.
