Alex Flyum, Sr. was born in Norway in 1873, and is thought to be the first Euro-American to live permanently on Iliamna Lake. His wife was from Katmai Village, and he homesteaded at Soda Spring near Reindeer Bay, Iliamna Lake. According to Alex's granddaughter, Violet Wilson, in 1918, he took mail via dog sled through Lake Clark Pass, and it took him forty days to reach Tyonek (Naknek, May 2, 1994).
