Description:
In 1905, the first reindeer to come to the Bristol Bay country arrived near Kokhanok, Alaska, herded by a Norwegian Lapp and Natives from Bethel. Holly Foss of Old Iliamna took this photo of the Kokhanok Reindeer Station around 1910. After the station was abandoned, Alex Flyum moved to the site. Flyum, who was born in Norway, is thought to be the first permanent Euroamerican settler to make his home in the Iliamna country. Flyum immigrated to the U.S. in 1894 and helped build the first school at Old Iliamna village in 1908. He was married to Annie Rickteroff.
