Multi-year Ice

Description:
Old multi-year ice (piqaluyak) incorporated into the shorefast ice near Utqiaġvik, Alaska (previously known as Barrow). This type of ice becomes free of salt so is a source of fresh water for whaling crews camped on the ice every spring. Due to the low salt content, piqaluyak shatters more easily when struck by heavier incoming ice than does regular sea ice.
