Description:
DEW (Distant Early Warning) line radar station at Cape Sarichef on Unimak Island, May 15, 1963. This station, like many others along the Alaska coast, kept constant watch on the Russian Siberian coast during the tensions of the Cold War era. From World War II on into the Cold War, the military system pumped large amounts of federal money into the Alaska economy, both for construction and to supply the men and installations.
