Section 1: Notti, Joe\ children -- Abel; Freddy; Beverly; Stanley\ mother -- Madeline; Ruby\ Dulbi -- 1927; store\ guns -- for sale\ Notti, Joe -- too kind for business\ Dulbi -- gave too much away; went broke\ Lobovski, Mike -- took over store; went to Yukon after one year\ Cutoff -- Labovski too stingy\ Notti -- had barge\ store -- Steven worked in it\ gun -- bought .22 single shot for a no good mink skin\ fur -- same as money|
Section 2: Sackett, Jack\ storekeeper\ Vernetti, Dominic -- stocked Sackett to start\ dispute -- Vernetti failed to pay Sackett for working store; court, Sackett got store\ Sackett -- kind, but not modern\ trader -- had role of teaching Native people how to do things\ Sackett -- didn't keep people up to date|
Section 3: 1971 -- worried about it\ Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act -- eventually realized it was the best thing\ concerns -- people feared they might be forced off the land\ Sackett, John -- wrote Catherine in 1972 to ask her to teach about land claims in villages\ Fairbanks -- three weeks training; twelve people\ learning -- new words like "contiguous"\ villages -- went to eleven to teach\ Allakaket\ Koyukuk\ Tanana\ historic sites -- good provision\ Native Allotments\ surface rights -- bothers us\ dividend|
Section 4: guiding licenses -- proposal to issue\ Huslia\ opportunity -- for young people, guiding would help\ tourism -- good thing if done with respect\ role model -- try to be that for all kids\ grandparents -- showed us how to live\ parents -- worked so hard they didn't make it to old age\ Attla, George Sr. -- became chief in Huslia, 1950\ guiding -- he wanted somebody to do that from Huslia; people were against it\ Kotzebue -- friend from tried to get Steven to guide|
