Born and raised in Texas, Bruce Collins came to Alaska in 1979 to work on the National Park Service's Alaska Task Force that conducted research and worked with local people around Alaska to better understand the areas that were to become new national parks. Bruce first worked as a ranger for the National Park Service in the Lower 48 starting in 1965. He was Chief Ranger for Gates of the Arctic National Park and Preserve from 1981-1991. At the time he was interviewed in 1992, he was Aviation Manager for the National Park Service in Alaska, based in Anchorage.
