Alaska Humanities Forum

In 1996, the Alaska Humanities Forum sponsored The Communities of Memory Project, which supported a number of community meetings in towns across the state including BethelFairbanks, Homer, Juneau, Kenai-Soldotna, KotzebueNome, Unalaska, and Wasilla. These meetings allowed people to share their remembrances about the history of their communities and the things that made life in their town special. The recordings were acquired from the Alaska Humanities Forum offices by the former University of Alaska Fairbanks Oral History Curator, William Schneider. Recent developments in the technology have allowed us to preserve digital video records and make accessible a considerable amount of this important record to the public over the Web. We currently have six of these meeting available online and we hope to be able to add more to this web site in the coming years. This project is supported in part by a grant from the Alaska Humanities Forum and the National Endowment for the Humanities, a federal agency. Any views, findings, conclusions or recommendations expressed in this website do not necessarily represent those of the National Endowment for the Humanities.
